Additional Info

Paul Thek was an influential American multimedia artist who made work that both criticized and reflected popular culture , aesthetic trends and transient nature of art and life itself. An early innovator in the installation art movement, his work also incorporated painting, drawing performance, film and sculpture. Much of Thek’s work combined an endless imagination, eclectic interests and personal symbologies with American tropes, commercialism and casualties. These veered from the poetic and hopeful to associations with the Postbellum American South in characters such as Beau Jangles and Uncle Tom.

In 1975, Thek etched a number of plates on these subjects in Paris, France, which he brought with him upon his return to the United States but never printed. After the artist’s death in 1988, Brooke Alexander worked with his estate to publish these posthumous editions. Each print is numbered in graphite and estate stamped.
