Elizabeth Murray was a primary artist of the Neo-Expressionist movement in early 1980s New York. Her paintings could be considered a hybrid of painting and sculpture. They were usually large-format and wall-mounted works on shaped cavases, sometimes in multiple parts. They reflected many influences, including graffiti, cartoons, and the history of painting as well as domestic and philosophical concerns.
