This catalog was produced to accompany the exhibition “Tim Rollins & K.O.S. - A History”, which was organized by the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum & Gallery at Skidmore College in 2009. The exhibition also traveled to The Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA and the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, WA.

The exhibition chronicled the work of Tim Rollins, who created and taught a special hybrid art and literature class for at-risk youths in the South Bronx, New York City. Over several decades, Rollins and his students collaborated on making artwork that addressed the themes found in literature and the issues surrounding their own lives, in creative and expansive multi-media artworks.

The book comes with one such collaboration, a found brick painted to represent a burning building. This brick was one of a group of such brick paintings loaned to the actual museum exhibition. The painted bricks project is explained in James Romaine’s essay, which describes them thus: “Each brick was like the student [who made it]: solid, a little chipped, a little damaged, taken out of its rightful place, but it is beautiful and survives…we are broke but not broken”
